If you’ve landed on this blog, it’s because you absolutely hate having your picture taken, and I need you to know something… I am exactly the same way.
Every time I take a selfie, I hate it. Every time someone grabs my phone and says, “Let me get a picture of you!” I immediately start overthinking. Which side is my good side? What is my face doing? Why do I suddenly forget how to smile like a normal person?
For years, I avoided taking pictures by myself because I was so self-conscious about them. So when my own wedding day rolled around, I had all the same fears that so many brides tell us about.
“What if I look awkward?”
“What if I don’t know how to pose?”
“What if I hate every photo?”
And here’s what I learned, your wedding day feels completely different.
The morning of your wedding, you’re going to have your hair done, your makeup done, and you’ll step into the dress you’ve been dreaming about for months. Suddenly, you don’t feel like the person taking a random selfie in bad lighting on a Sunday afternoon.
You feel beautiful. You feel confident. You truly just feel like a bride.
And honestly? That feeling changes everything.

Surround Yourself with People Who Make You Feel Amazing
One of the biggest factors in how confident you’ll feel isn’t actually totally your dress or your makeup. It’s the people around you.
Choose to get ready with people who genuinely support you, love you, and make you feel good about yourself. These are your hype women and they will be for the whole day. They’re the ones who will tell you how stunning you look, fix your veil, laugh with you, and calm your nerves when they start creeping in.
The energy in your getting ready room matters more than you think. A room full of positivity and excitement can completely change how you feel in front of the camera.
Trust Your Photographer
I know this is easier said than done, but once you’ve hired a photographer whose work you love, trust them.
You do not need to magically become a model overnight. We know how to direct you, find flattering light, guide movement, and create photos that feel natural instead of stiff or awkward. And like your hype women, we will cheer you on, give you confidence, and tell you when to put your chin up!
One thing I always encourage couples to do is be honest about any insecurities they have with us.
For example, one of my eyes is slightly smaller than the other. It’s something I’ve always noticed in photos. Before my wedding portraits, I mentioned it to my photographer. They were incredibly understanding and adjusted angles and poses to minimize it.
A good photographer wants you to love your photos. We can’t help with concerns we don’t know about, so don’t be afraid to communicate them.
Save Photos You Love Before the Wedding
One thing that can help you feel less awkward is spending a little time looking at wedding photos you genuinely love.
Create a Pinterest board, save Instagram posts, and screenshot poses that feel natural to you.
This doesn’t mean you’re expected to recreate every image. It simply helps your photographer understand what you’re drawn to and gives you confidence heading into the day.
You might discover that you love movement, walking shots, laughter, close-up moments, or candid interactions much more than traditional posing, and your photographers will adjust.
The Secret to Looking Natural
Want to know the biggest secret?
Most “natural” wedding photos aren’t created by standing perfectly still and smiling at the camera, or just completely ignoring the camera.
They’re created through movement, walking together, talking, laughing, hugging, looking at each other or looking away, whispering something ridiculous, and most importantly, following your photographer’s prompts.
The couples who look the most comfortable in photos are usually the couples who stop worrying about the poses and start focusing on each other.
Don’t Overthink Every Photo
This is probably the most important advice I can give. Your wedding gallery is not supposed to be a collection of perfect poses. It’s supposed to tell the story of one of the happiest days of your life.
When you look back at your wedding photos years from now, you won’t be analyzing every angle of your face.
You’ll be remembering how you felt.
You’ll remember your dad seeing you in your dress.
You’ll remember your partner’s face when they saw you walking down the aisle.
You’ll remember laughing with your best friends and dancing with your family.
Those moments are what make wedding photos beautiful.
My Best Tip for Candid Photos
For portraits, all the tips above apply.
For candid photos, my advice is much simpler. Be aware of where your photographer is at all times. Don’t worry about it, but just know where they are.
You don’t need to stare at the camera or pose every time you see them. Just avoid turning your back completely or blocking yourself behind a crowd if possible.
Stand tall, practice good posture, smile often, and then go enjoy your day.
The best candid photos happen when you’re genuinely having fun!
Stay Close to Your New Husband
If you tell me you want lots of candid photos with your husband, I have one piece of advice: stay together.
I know it sounds obvious, but once the reception starts, couples often get pulled in opposite directions by guests, family members, and conversations.
Stick together as much as possible. Hold hands, steal little moments together, laugh together, dance together, and stay connected.
Those are the moments that photograph beautifully because they’re real.
Final Thoughts
If you’re worried about looking awkward in your wedding photos, you’re not alone. Honestly, most brides feel that way.
And coming from someone who has spent years avoiding photos of herself, I can promise you this: your wedding day is different.
You’ll be surrounded by people who love you, you’ll feel beautiful, you’ll be marrying the person you love most. And when you’re focused on soaking in those moments instead of worrying about the camera, that’s when the magic happens.
The goal is to look like yourself, completely in love, on one of the best days of your life!! This is truly what photographs beautifully.
